Diezani’s UK Acquittal Won’t End Nigeria’s Probe, HEDA Says

HEDA has urged Nigerian authorities to continue investigating separate corruption allegations and asset-recovery proceedings involving former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, saying her acquittal by a UK court does not automatically bring those matters to an end.

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda made the call following the June 17, 2026 decision by a London jury to acquit Alison-Madueke of six bribery-related charges brought in the United Kingdom.

HEDA Chairman Olanrewaju Suraju said the UK judgment should be respected, but only in relation to the specific charges that were tried before the Southwark Crown Court.

He argued that the verdict should not be interpreted as a final determination of every allegation, investigation or asset-recovery proceeding involving the former minister in Nigeria.

“The UK judgment should be respected for what it is: a decision on the specific criminal charges,” Suraju said, according to HEDA.

Separate Nigerian Proceedings

Alison-Madueke has faced legal proceedings in Nigeria involving allegations of corruption and the recovery or forfeiture of assets.

HEDA said criminal prosecution and asset recovery are separate legal processes. It therefore called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other relevant agencies to independently assess available evidence and determine whether viable cases remain.

The group also stressed that any further action must comply with due process, fair-hearing requirements and protections against being prosecuted twice for the same offence.

The former minister has consistently denied wrongdoing.

What the UK Court Decided

The UK case followed a lengthy investigation into allegations that Alison-Madueke accepted bribes and other benefits while serving as Nigeria’s petroleum minister.

On June 17, a London jury found her not guilty of all six charges brought against her. Her brother, Doye Agama, and oil industry executive Olatimbo Ayinde were also acquitted of charges in the same case.

The acquittal brought the UK criminal case to an end, but it did not automatically settle separate proceedings concerning assets or allegations under Nigerian law.

HEDA Wants Asset-Recovery Status Clarified

HEDA also called for greater transparency over assets that have been recovered or forfeited in connection with corruption investigations.

The organisation said Nigerian authorities should clarify what assets have been recovered, where they are being held, how they are being managed and how any recovered funds are being used.

The group further argued that Nigeria should strengthen its own investigative and evidence-gathering systems rather than depend on foreign courts to resolve corruption cases involving Nigerian officials.

Why the Issue Matters

The renewed debate puts the focus on the distinction between a criminal acquittal in one jurisdiction and separate legal proceedings in another.

For Nigeria, the key question is now whether the EFCC and other agencies have sufficient evidence to continue any domestic cases or asset-recovery actions while respecting the outcome of the UK trial.
