A new chapter has opened in the public disagreement between Afrobeats star Davido and Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, after a senior aide to the governor warned the singer against returning to Edo State.

The controversy began after Apostle Kassy Chukwu, the governor's Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media, claimed in a video that Davido had been banned from performing in Edo for the remainder of Okpebholo's administration.

The statement quickly spread across social media, generating debate over whether a state government could prevent an entertainer from performing because of a political disagreement.

However, the Edo State Government has now sought to distance itself from the statement, saying there is no official ban on Davido.

What Started the Dispute?

The latest controversy is connected to the heated political exchanges surrounding the Osun State governorship election.

Davido openly supported his uncle, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke, during the election campaign.

Governor Okpebholo had criticised Adeleke and his political activities during the campaign period.

Davido subsequently responded publicly, escalating the disagreement between the singer and the Edo governor.

The dispute became even more personal after Davido shared what appeared to be Governor Okpebholo's WAEC resulton social media while challenging some of the governor's comments.

The singer refused to apologise, arguing that the Edo governor had no business involving himself in the affairs of another state while criticising Adeleke.

Governor's Aide Says Davido Is Not Welcome

In a video circulated online, Kassy Chukwu told Davido that he would not be allowed to perform in Edo State.

The governor's aide reportedly said:

“You have been banned from coming to Edo State to perform.”

He also claimed that some Edo youths were unhappy with Davido and warned that the singer could receive a hostile reception if he returned to the state.

The remarks immediately generated reactions because of the implication that an entertainer could potentially be prevented from performing in a state following a political disagreement.

Government Distances Itself From the Statement

The situation became more complicated after the Edo State Government reportedly clarified that Davido has not been officially banned.

That distinction is important.

The statement by the governor's aide appears to have been made in his personal capacity rather than as a formal government directive.

As a result, the controversy has shifted from whether Davido has actually been banned to whether a senior government official should have made such a warning publicly in the first place.

Why Davido Became Involved in the Osun Election

Davido's involvement in the Osun election was not surprising.

Governor Adeleke is his uncle, and the singer has previously been vocal about his support for members of his family involved in politics.

During the 2026 election campaign, Davido was particularly active on social media, responding to politicians and defending Adeleke.

The election eventually ended with Adeleke retaining the Osun governorship, adding another dimension to the political rivalry that had developed during the campaign.

The Controversy Has Now Moved to Edo

The latest dispute is unusual because it involves an entertainer and a state government rather than a direct political contest.

Davido is one of Nigeria's most internationally recognised musicians, and his concerts attract large audiences.

A formal ban on his performances in Edo would therefore have implications beyond politics, potentially affecting entertainment businesses, event organisers and fans.

But with the state government now distancing itself from the aide's statement, it remains unclear whether any official restrictions will actually be imposed.

What People Are Saying Online

The issue has generated significant discussion across social media.

One side argues that Davido should be free to perform wherever he is invited, regardless of his political disagreements with individual politicians.

Some users believe the aide's comments went too far and could make a political disagreement appear like an official government policy.

Others, particularly supporters of Governor Okpebholo, have defended the governor's camp and argued that Davido should not publicly disrespect elected officials.

Another group is simply amused by how quickly the disagreement has escalated from the Osun election into a controversy over whether Davido can perform in Edo.

The Political Angle

There is also a wider political dimension to the dispute.

Davido's influence extends beyond music, particularly among younger Nigerians.

His willingness to comment on political issues means that his statements can attract significant attention online.

Politicians, meanwhile, are increasingly aware of the influence entertainers and social-media personalities can have on public opinion.

That makes confrontations involving major celebrities potentially much bigger than ordinary political arguments.

Could Davido Actually Be Banned?

At this stage, there is no evidence of a formal Edo State government order banning Davido from entering or performing in the state.

The controversial statement came from a senior aide, but the state government has reportedly denied that the singer has been officially banned.

That means headlines suggesting that Davido has already been legally prohibited from entering Edo would go beyond what has been established.

The situation could still develop if the governor's office issues a formal directive, but that has not been established in the reports currently available.

Why the Story Matters

The dispute raises an interesting question about the boundary between politics, celebrity influence and government authority.

Politicians are entitled to criticise public figures, while entertainers are entitled to express political opinions.

But when a government official suggests that a performer should be prevented from appearing in a state, questions naturally arise about whether political disagreements are being allowed to influence access to public spaces and entertainment venues.

That is why the government's clarification is important.

Davido Has Not Backed Down

Davido has generally maintained a confrontational tone throughout the dispute.

His involvement in the Osun election was public, and he has continued to defend his uncle against criticism from political opponents.

There has been no indication that he intends to apologise over the exchange with Okpebholo's camp.

That means another round of social-media exchanges could still emerge.

What Happens Next?

For now, the biggest question is whether the Edo Government will issue a more detailed clarification concerning Davido's status.

If the state confirms that there is no restriction on the singer, the controversy could gradually die down.

If another official statement or directive emerges, however, the issue could become significantly bigger.

For Davido, the dispute is another example of how his celebrity status increasingly intersects with Nigerian politics.

For Governor Okpebholo's administration, the episode also presents a communications challenge: distinguishing the comments of an individual aide from official government policy.

And for Nigerians watching the drama online, the question is perhaps the simplest one:

Was Davido actually banned from Edo — or did one political argument simply get too far?

Based on the reports currently available, there is no confirmed official ban.

What People Are Saying on X

The reaction is broadly divided.

Davido supporters argue that a political disagreement should not determine where an entertainer can perform.

Governor Okpebholo's supporters say Davido should be more respectful when criticising elected officials.

Others are questioning why an aide to a governor would publicly threaten to prevent a major Nigerian artist from performing in the state.

There is also plenty of humour around the dispute, with some Nigerians treating it as the latest chapter in the increasingly public back-and-forth between Davido and politicians.

One thing is worth stressing: online claims that Davido has been formally banned should not be presented as fact unless the Edo Government issues an official order confirming such a restriction.
