Fresh Attack in Plateau Leaves Residents Dead, Homes and Crops Destroyed
Several residents are feared dead after an attack on settlements in Jwak Maitumbi, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, with reports that about 45 shelters were destroyed and large quantities of crops damaged.

Several residents are feared dead following a fresh attack on settlements in Jwak Maitumbi, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Sunday, August 16.
The incident has prompted a renewed security response in the area, where tensions between communities have remained high following a series of violent confrontations in recent days.
According to a report by security-focused publication Zagazola Makama, which cited a military security source, the attack was reported at about 7:45 a.m., after which troops from Sector 8 of Operation Enduring Peace moved into the affected community.
About 45 Shelters Reportedly Destroyed
The security source cited in the report said troops found approximately 45 residential shelters destroyed when they arrived at the community.
Valuables belonging to residents were also reportedly looted, while farms belonging to affected residents were said to have been damaged.
Zagazola Makama reported that the attackers used cutlasses to destroy large quantities of crops, adding that the incident resulted in displacement as women, children and elderly residents fled the area for safety.
The exact number of people killed has not been independently confirmed. TheCable reported that several residents were feared killed, while noting that the Plateau State Police Command had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.
Security Forces Move Into the Area
Following the attack, troops reportedly engaged community leaders as part of efforts to identify those responsible and prevent further violence.
The Galadima and youth leader of Jwak Maitumbi were summoned and asked to assist security agencies with information that could help identify the perpetrators.
Security personnel have also remained in the general area as authorities seek to prevent further attacks and possible retaliation.
The latest incident comes only days after another violent confrontation was reported in the same community.
Previous Clash Left Three Dead
On August 12, three people were killed during a clash involving suspected Fulani and Mwaghavul youths in Jwak Maitumbi.
TheCable, citing Zagazola Makama, reported that the victims included one member of the local community and two Fulani herders, while another local resident was injured. Troops subsequently intervened and carried out clearance operations in the area.
The latest attack has therefore raised concerns about the possibility of further retaliation in a community already affected by recent violence.
Authorities Face Pressure to Prevent Escalation
Plateau has experienced repeated communal and security-related violence, particularly in areas where disputes involving farmers, herders and local communities have escalated into attacks and reprisals.
Security analysts have warned that attacks followed by retaliation can create a cycle of violence that becomes increasingly difficult to contain.
In its report on the latest incident, Zagazola Makama similarly warned that the destruction of homes and crops could increase tensions if those responsible are not identified and brought to justice.
For residents of Jwak Maitumbi, the immediate concern is restoring security and allowing displaced families to return safely.
The authorities will also face the challenge of establishing exactly what happened, determining the number of casualties and identifying those responsible.
As of the latest available reporting, the casualty figure remains unconfirmed, and the Plateau State Police Command had not publicly provided a detailed account of the incident.
