Governor Ademola Adeleke has outlined an ambitious economic agenda for his second term in office, saying his administration will focus on transforming Osun State from a predominantly civil-service economy into a more industrialised state.

Adeleke made the commitment during an appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today following his victory in the August 15 governorship election.

The governor said attracting investors and creating an environment for industrial development would be among the major priorities of his administration over the next four years.

Adeleke Wants Osun to Become an Industrial State

According to Adeleke, he wants to move Osun away from its longstanding dependence on government and civil-service activity by encouraging more industrial investment.

He said his objective is to make the state more attractive to investors and create an economy capable of generating opportunities beyond government employment.

The governor also expressed confidence that several ongoing and planned projects would help support the transformation during his second term, adding that interest from potential investors was already growing.

The proposed shift could have implications for employment, small businesses and the state's ability to generate internally driven economic activity if the administration succeeds in attracting the investment it is targeting.

Building on the First Term

Adeleke's second-term plans come shortly after he secured re-election in a closely watched governorship contest.

The Accord Party candidate polled 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who recorded 444,815 votes. African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.

Adeleke won 19 of Osun's 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11.

The result gives Adeleke another four years to pursue the development agenda he says will reposition the state.

Governor Promises a Lasting Legacy

Beyond industrialisation, Adeleke said he wants his second term to produce a legacy that extends beyond his administration.

The governor said he wants Osun to become a reference point that other states can look to when considering how to approach development and governance.

He has also spoken about maintaining opportunities for women and young people in government and ensuring that residents, regardless of their political affiliations, contribute ideas to the state's development.

Reconciliation After a Divisive Election

Adeleke's second-term agenda also comes with a political reconciliation component.

Following his victory, the governor said he plans to establish a reconciliation committee aimed at bringing together political opponents and other stakeholders after a competitive campaign.

He has also called on those who supported other candidates to participate in the development of Osun, emphasising that voters will naturally make different political choices in an election.

The approach could be important as Adeleke begins his second term, particularly after an election that attracted significant attention from Nigeria's major political parties.

What Osun Residents Will Be Watching

The announcement of an industrialisation-focused agenda now shifts attention toward implementation.

For residents, some of the key questions will be whether the administration can attract significant private investment, create sustainable employment opportunities and reduce dependence on government-related economic activity.

The governor's re-election provides him with another four-year mandate to pursue those objectives.

President Bola Tinubu and several opposition figures have congratulated Adeleke on his victory, while political leaders have urged him to use the new mandate to advance development and unite residents across political lines.

For Adeleke, the election victory has therefore marked the beginning of another phase: turning campaign promises and second-term ambitions into measurable economic and social outcomes for the people of Osun State.
