Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed veteran Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson, marking a significant political move ahead of the continuing realignments surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

Okonkwo, a lawyer, actor and political commentator, has become a prominent voice in Nigerian opposition politics in recent years. He previously served as one of the spokespersons for the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign during the 2023 general election before later distancing himself from the Labour Party and its leadership.

His appointment by Atiku is expected to attract political attention because of his previous close association with Peter Obi and the wider debate about alliances and political positioning ahead of 2027.

During the 2023 presidential election campaign, Okonkwo was one of the prominent media voices defending the presidential ambition of Peter Obi. His later departure from the Labour Party marked a major change in his political journey.

The latest development could further fuel discussions about the shape of Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the next presidential election, particularly as political figures and opposition groups continue consultations and strategic positioning.

Atiku, who has contested the Nigerian presidency several times, remains one of the country’s most influential opposition politicians. The addition of Okonkwo to his communication team could strengthen his public engagement and media strategy as political activities gradually build toward 2027.

Okonkwo is widely known beyond politics for his long career in Nollywood. His transition from entertainment into law, public commentary and active politics has made him a recognisable figure across different sections of Nigerian society.

More details about the scope of his new role and the political strategy surrounding the appointment are expected to emerge as the development unfolds.
