Enugu Police Rescue 211 Kidnap Victims as 6,240 Suspects Detained in 17-Month Security Operation

The Enugu State Police Command has reported a major security operation spanning 17 months, saying its officers rescued 211 kidnapped victims and detained 6,240 suspects across the state.

The figures were disclosed by the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Giwa, during a visit by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 13, Miller Dantawaye.

According to the command, the period under review covers its operational activities since Giwa assumed office as Commissioner of Police on March 11, 2025.

The police said the operations resulted in the recovery of 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of assorted ammunition, alongside 209 vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles recovered as part of investigations and enforcement operations.

The scale of the figures provides an insight into the range of security challenges confronting the state and the resources being deployed by law enforcement agencies to tackle them.

Breakdown of the Police Figures

The Enugu police command said the 6,240 suspects detained during the 17-month period were linked to different categories of alleged offences.

The breakdown provided by the command includes 158 kidnapping suspects, 186 armed robbery suspects and 188 suspects linked to murder cases.

Police also reported detaining 57 suspects over alleged rape and defilement offences, 273 suspects linked to cultism and 63 suspects over alleged unlawful possession of firearms.

The remaining 5,315 suspects were detained in connection with other alleged offences, including stealing, breaking and vandalism.

The command said the firearms recovered included 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 assault rifle, in addition to other weapons.

Police Link Results to Intelligence-Led Operations

Commissioner Giwa attributed the reported results to sustained intelligence-led operations, proactive policing and cooperation between security agencies and neighbouring states.

The command highlighted several measures it said had contributed to its operations, including the deployment of its Violent Crime Response Unit and intensified border patrols.

Police also pointed to the Inspector-General of Police's Handshake Patrol initiative, as well as the use of a Distress Response Squad and Command-and-Control Centre to improve emergency responses.

The commissioner appealed for continued support from the police zone, particularly in manpower, operational equipment and personnel welfare.

He said additional support would help the command consolidate its security operations across Enugu State.

Police Leadership Calls for Professionalism

During the visit, AIG Miller Dantawaye urged officers and other personnel of the command to maintain professionalism, discipline and accountability in the discharge of their duties.

He also stressed the importance of respecting citizens' rights and following police regulations.

The senior police officer encouraged personnel to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and work toward maintaining public confidence in the police.
