Residents in parts of Benin City, Edo State, are expressing renewed frustration over flooding and deteriorating road conditions, with particular attention being drawn to roads around the Government Reserved Area (GRA) and routes leading toward the Edo State Government House.

Images and comments circulating online have renewed discussion about the condition of some roads in the state capital, with residents questioning whether enough attention is being given to drainage, road maintenance and flood prevention.

The online conversation has also placed Governor Monday Okpebholo's infrastructure agenda under renewed scrutiny, particularly as heavy rainfall continues to expose weaknesses in parts of the city's drainage and road networks.

Residents Question Road Conditions

The complaints are not entirely new.

In July 2025, residents and motorists interviewed in Benin City told The Guardian that several roads around the GRA and routes connecting the area to the Government House were in poor condition.

Residents at the time complained about potholes and flooding, with one resident describing two link roads in the GRA leading to the Government House as heavily affected by water and poor road surfaces.

Motorists also identified roads around the Edo NUJ Secretariat, the Golf Course area and routes close to the Government House as areas where flooding and deteriorating road surfaces had become a concern.

Social Media Turns Attention to Government

The latest online reaction has brought the issue back into public conversation.

Some social-media users are questioning why roads in and around the state capital remain vulnerable to flooding, particularly when the affected areas include routes used by government officials and residents travelling to important public institutions.

Others have used the discussion to call on the state government to prioritise road rehabilitation and drainage infrastructure rather than focusing exclusively on major showcase projects.

An indexed X post, for example, questioned the governor's attention to the condition of roads in Edo while referencing his movements outside the state.

However, social-media reactions represent individual opinions and should not be treated as evidence that every road in Edo State is experiencing the same level of flooding.

Government Has Promised Infrastructure Development

The criticism comes as the Okpebholo administration continues to present infrastructure as one of its priorities.

The governor has repeatedly highlighted infrastructure under his administration's SHINE Agenda, which includes Security, Health, Infrastructure, Nutrition and Agriculture, and Education.

Okpebholo has also said contractors who fail to meet project specifications could lose their contracts, stressing that his administration expects public projects to meet required standards.

The administration has therefore faced growing expectations to demonstrate that its infrastructure plans will translate into improvements residents can see in their communities.

Why Flooding Remains a Concern

Flooding in Benin City is not simply a road-surface problem.

Poor drainage can make existing potholes worse, restrict movement and create additional costs for motorists and residents. During periods of heavy rainfall, roads that are already damaged can quickly become difficult or unsafe to navigate.

The problem can also affect businesses when vehicles and customers struggle to reach commercial areas.

For residents, the concern is therefore broader than the appearance of a flooded road. They want roads that remain usable during the rainy season and drainage systems capable of handling heavy rainfall.

Calls for Long-Term Solutions

The renewed complaints have also revived calls for a more systematic approach to road rehabilitation.

Rather than repeatedly repairing roads after heavy rainfall, residents and motorists have argued for improvements that combine proper road construction with effective drainage.

The Guardian previously reported residents calling for the rehabilitation of failed roads across Benin City and its surrounding areas, highlighting the impact of the rainy season on already deteriorating infrastructure.

Such an approach would require authorities to identify vulnerable roads, address drainage problems and ensure that rehabilitation projects are built to withstand the conditions they are expected to face.

What Residents Will Be Watching

For the Okpebholo administration, the renewed discussion presents another test of its infrastructure promises.

Residents are likely to judge progress not only by major projects but also by the condition of everyday roads used to get to work, schools, markets and government offices.

The latest social-media discussion does not by itself establish the extent of flooding across Benin City, nor does it establish that the state government has failed to address every reported road problem.

What it does demonstrate is that road conditions and flooding remain sensitive public issues in Edo, particularly during the rainy season.

As rainfall continues, residents will be watching to see whether the state government's infrastructure programme produces visible improvements in areas that have experienced recurring flooding and road deterioration.
