Nigeria has finished fourth at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, ending the competition with 24 medals as the host nation recorded one of its strongest performances in the sport.

Team Nigeria collected one gold, five silver and 18 bronze medals during the championships, which brought together athletes from 20 Commonwealth countries.

The result placed Nigeria among the leading teams at the competition and made it the highest-ranked African nation in the final standings, according to sports reports.

Young Nigerian Makes History

One of the biggest highlights of Nigeria's campaign came from 17-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwa-Thompson, who won the country's only gold medal.

Her victory was particularly significant because it marked Nigeria's first international gold medal in fencing, according to reports on the championships.

The performance has been described as an important milestone for Nigerian fencing, particularly as the country continues efforts to develop the sport among younger athletes.

Wheelchair Fencers Add to Nigeria's Medal Haul

Nigeria's debut wheelchair fencing squad also made a notable contribution to the country's final medal tally.

Reports indicate that members of the wheelchair team accounted for a significant proportion of Nigeria's silver and bronze medals, adding another important dimension to the country's performance at the Lagos championships.

The inclusion of wheelchair fencing was itself an important feature of the 2026 championships. The Commonwealth Fencing Federation introduced wheelchair fencing as an official medalling event at this edition of the competition.

India Dominates the Championships

India finished at the top of the final medal table after producing a dominant performance throughout the competition.

The Indian team collected 25 gold, 20 silver and 18 bronze medals, putting it well ahead of the other competing nations. England finished second with three gold medals, while Wales moved ahead of Nigeria late in the competition after winning gold in the men's veteran sabre event.

South Africa completed the top five.

The final standings therefore saw Nigeria finish just outside the top three despite its substantial medal haul.

Adeyinka Samuel Adds Another Historic Moment

Nigeria's performance also included a notable individual achievement from Adeyinka Samuel, president of the Nigeria Fencing Federation and Commonwealth Fencing Federation.

Samuel returned to competitive fencing after a 13-year absence and won silver in the men's veteran sabre event.

His medal made him the first Nigerian sabre fencer to win a medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships, according to the Voice of Nigeria and sports reports.

Samuel's return added another memorable chapter to a competition that produced several milestones for Nigerian fencing.

A Significant Championship for Nigeria

The championships were held in Lagos, giving Nigeria the opportunity to compete on home soil while also hosting athletes and officials from across the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Fencing Federation described the Nigerian edition as significant because it expanded the programme to include U-23 individual competitions alongside established senior and veteran events. Wheelchair fencing was also incorporated as an official medal event.

For Nigeria, the fourth-place finish provides another indication of growing interest and competitive development in fencing.

The immediate challenge will now be to build on the performances recorded in Lagos and ensure that the young athletes who emerged during the championships continue to receive opportunities to compete at higher levels.

With a historic gold medal, five silver medals and 18 bronze medals, Nigeria leaves the competition with a strong foundation to build upon.
