Gunmen Kill Mourners After Funeral in Benue, Renewing Fears Over Escalating Violence

At least eight people have been killed after gunmen opened fire on mourners following a funeral in Benue State, according to police, in another deadly attack that has deepened concerns about the worsening security situation in Nigeria's Middle Belt. Rights groups say the death toll may be higher and have called on authorities to take stronger action to protect vulnerable communities.

What began as a day of mourning ended in another tragedy.

Families who had gathered to bury a loved one instead found themselves running for their lives as heavily armed gunmen opened fire in Benue State, turning a funeral into a scene of panic and bloodshed.

According to the Benue State Police Command, the attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday in the Otukpo-Nobi community, where mourners were leaving a funeral ceremony when the assailants struck. Police said at least eight people were killed, while five others sustained injuries.

For a state that has witnessed repeated attacks over the past several years, the latest killings have once again raised difficult questions about security, justice and the safety of rural communities.

A Community in Shock

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion as gunfire erupted without warning.

People reportedly scattered in different directions, desperately trying to escape.

Some hid in nearby bushes.

Others attempted to help the wounded despite the continuing danger.

By the time the shooting stopped, several mourners had lost their lives, while homes and a motorcycle had also been set ablaze during the attack, according to police.

What should have been a moment of comfort and remembrance instead became another painful chapter for families already grieving.

Police Deploy More Officers

Benue State Police spokesperson Udeme Edet confirmed the attack and said additional security personnel had been deployed to the area.

Authorities say investigations are underway to identify those responsible and determine the motive behind the killings.

At the time of writing, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Rights Group Reports Higher Death Toll

While police confirmed eight fatalities, Amnesty International Nigeria said it had documented at least 10 deaths, highlighting the difficulty of establishing casualty figures immediately after attacks in remote communities.

Differences in casualty figures are common during the early stages of such incidents as rescue efforts continue and authorities verify information.

Benue Remains One of Nigeria's Most Vulnerable States

Benue has long been one of the states most affected by violent attacks.

The state, often described as Nigeria's "Food Basket," has experienced recurring insecurity linked to disputes over land use, farming, grazing routes and broader criminal activity.

Many communities have endured repeated attacks, displacement and loss of livelihoods over the years.

The latest killings have revived fears among residents that violence continues to spread despite repeated promises of stronger security measures.

Funeral Attacks Deepen Community Trauma

Attacks during funerals carry a particularly devastating emotional impact.

Families already coping with the loss of loved ones suddenly become victims themselves.

Beyond the immediate loss of life, such incidents create lasting psychological trauma throughout affected communities.

For many residents, attending community gatherings—including funerals, weddings and religious services—has become increasingly associated with fear rather than safety.

Youth Demand Action

Following the attack, reports indicated that young people staged protests, expressing frustration over the repeated violence and calling for stronger government protection.

Amnesty International said the demonstrations reflected growing public anger over recurring raids and insecurity affecting communities across Benue State.

Many residents argue that security responses often arrive only after attacks have already taken place.

Security Challenges Continue

The attack highlights the broader security challenges facing parts of Nigeria's Middle Belt.

Communities continue to call for:

  • Faster emergency response.

  • Increased security presence in vulnerable rural areas.

  • Better intelligence gathering.

  • More effective prosecution of those responsible for attacks.

  • Long-term solutions to recurring violence.

Analysts have repeatedly warned that addressing insecurity requires not only military deployments but also sustained efforts to strengthen local policing, improve conflict resolution and tackle the economic pressures that contribute to instability.

Beyond the Headlines

Each new attack quickly becomes another statistic.

Another casualty figure.

Another breaking news alert.

But behind every number is a family whose life has changed forever.

Parents who will never return home.

Children left without loved ones.

Communities forced to bury victims instead of celebrating life.

For many Nigerians, that is the greatest tragedy.

The attacks have become so frequent that they risk being viewed as routine.

They should never become routine.

The Search for Lasting Peace

As investigations continue, families in Otukpo-Nobi are once again left to mourn.

For them, justice will mean more than arrests.

It will mean confidence that future funerals, church services and community gatherings can take place without fear of armed violence.

Until that confidence is restored, every new attack serves as another reminder that security remains one of Nigeria's greatest national challenges.

The victims of Sunday's attack had gathered to honour the dead.

Instead, their community is preparing to bury even more loved ones.
