Morocco have once again given African football something to celebrate after defeating Canada 3-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Atlas Lions were made to work for the victory, particularly during a difficult first half in which Canada created several opportunities but failed to take advantage of them.

Morocco remained patient and showed the kind of maturity that has increasingly become a feature of their football.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the second half through Azzedine Ounahi, who finished a well-worked free-kick routine after captain Achraf Hakimi found him in space.

Ounahi later scored his second goal of the match as Morocco punished Canada on the counterattack. Substitute Soufiane Rahimi completed the victory with a third goal late in the game.

Ounahi's performance also carried historical significance. He became the first African player since Senegal's Henri Camara in 2002 to score twice in a World Cup knockout match.

The scoreline may suggest a comfortable evening, but Morocco's victory was built on patience, discipline and ruthless finishing. Canada enjoyed strong periods of the game, particularly in the opening half, but Morocco absorbed the pressure and took their chances when they arrived.

Three goals from four shots on target demonstrated the efficiency of a Moroccan team that increasingly looks comfortable among international football's strongest sides.

Morocco's progress is particularly significant for African football. After their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, there were questions about whether that achievement could be repeated.

Four years later, the Atlas Lions are proving that their previous success was not simply a one-off tournament miracle.

They have now reached consecutive World Cup quarter-finals and will face France on July 9 for a place in the semi-finals.

The coming match will be another enormous test, but Morocco have already shown that they are no longer satisfied with simply participating in football's biggest tournament.

For millions of supporters across Africa, the dream continues.
