Nigeria Police Break Silence on VDM's Allegations, Invite AIG Jimoh for Questioning and Ask Social Critic to Present Evidence

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued its first comprehensive public response to the weeks-long controversy involving social commentator and self-described "online police" Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), and Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olohundare Moshood Jimoh.

In a press release signed by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Ani Iniedu, the Police said it was responding to widespread public commentary surrounding VDM's allegations against the senior police officer and sought to clarify both the judicial and administrative processes involved.

Police Say Matter Is Already Before the Court

According to the statement, the criminal matter referenced by VDM has already been investigated and is currently before a court of competent jurisdiction following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The Force stressed that because the matter is now sub judice, it will not attempt to influence the judicial process or allow the outcome of the case to be shaped by public campaigns or social media commentary.

AIG Jimoh Invited for Questioning

In one of the statement's most significant revelations, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, AIG Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, has been invited by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) as part of an internal administrative review into the allegations raised against him.

The Police said the invitation reflects its commitment to investigating credible allegations against any officer, regardless of rank.

VDM Also Asked to Appear Before Investigators

The Force further disclosed that VDM was formally invited by the Force CID in Abuja through a letter dated July 30, 2026.

According to the Police, the invitation is intended to allow VDM to present and substantiate the allegations he has made publicly.

The statement urged him to honour the invitation and cooperate with investigators rather than pursuing what it described as public campaigns aimed at influencing disciplinary outcomes.

Police Warn Against Trial by Social Media

The Nigeria Police Force acknowledged that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to freedom of expression and to demand accountability from public institutions.

However, it cautioned that freedom of expression does not extend to defamation or the public amplification of unsubstantiated allegations as a substitute for established investigative procedures.

The Force stated that complaints against police officers should be formally submitted, investigated and objectively assessed through recognised institutional mechanisms.

It also warned that if allegations are found to be deliberately false and intended to damage the reputation of officers or the institution, appropriate legal action could be pursued.

Reaffirming Commitment to Due Process

The Police concluded the statement by reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, transparency, accountability and the rule of law.

It maintained that no officer is above the law and that no genuine complaint would be ignored, while also insisting that disciplinary action must follow the procedures established by law.
