Rivers Police Nab Suspected One-Chance Robbery Gang in Port Harcourt
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested suspected members of a one-chance robbery syndicate operating in Port Harcourt after a passenger reportedly raised an alarm during an attack. The incident at Rumuosi Junction triggered a chase involving residents before police intervened and took the suspects into custody.

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested suspected members of a one-chance robbery syndicate in Port Harcourt, following a dramatic incident that began when a passenger reportedly raised an alarm during an alleged attack.
The suspects were apprehended around Rumuosi Junction, after residents reportedly joined a pursuit of the vehicle allegedly being used by the gang.
According to the police and local reports, the incident involved a female passenger who was reportedly attacked after boarding a minibus whose other occupants were allegedly members of the robbery group.
Passenger Raises Alarm
Reports indicate that the incident occurred around 9pm, when the suspects allegedly attempted to divert the passenger towards the Rumuekini axis near a flyover.
The situation reportedly changed when the passenger began shouting for help.
One account said a victim was thrown from the moving vehicle while another passenger continued calling for assistance, drawing the attention of people nearby.
Residents subsequently pursued the vehicle.
The chase reportedly ended after the vehicle became stuck, allowing the suspects to be apprehended before police officers took them into custody.
Police Arrest Suspects
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest and identified two suspects in its July statement as Uche Samuel, 45, from Omunato in Imo State, and Nkechi Amadi, 42, from Nekede in Imo State.
Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects were involved in a one-chance robbery syndicate operating in the state.
The command also said the suspects reportedly made confessional statements during questioning, while efforts were continuing to locate other alleged members of the syndicate.
As with all criminal allegations, the suspects remain entitled to due process and should be regarded as suspected offenders unless convicted by a court.
What Is One-Chance Robbery?
“One chance” is a term commonly used in Nigeria to describe robberies in which criminals pose as commercial transport operators or passengers before attacking unsuspecting commuters.
The criminals may operate in taxis, minibuses or other vehicles and target people who believe they are entering ordinary commercial transport.
Victims can then be robbed of cash, phones, bank cards and other valuables.
In some cases, gangs may force passengers to disclose banking information or withdraw money from their accounts.
Port Harcourt Has Faced Repeated Incidents
The latest arrest is not an isolated development.
The Rivers Police Command has repeatedly announced arrests linked to one-chance operations in Port Harcourt.
In another case reported in May, police arrested five suspects over an alleged one-chance operation in which more than ₦4.6 million was reportedly withdrawn from a victim's bank account.
The police said that investigation linked the suspects to similar operations across the Port Harcourt metropolis.
In July, the command also announced the arrest of two suspected members of another one-chance syndicate following an incident involving a female passenger in the Rumuosi area.
Police Intensify Crackdown
The arrests form part of a broader security operation by the Rivers State Police Command.
In August, the command announced that it had arrested 18 suspected criminals in operations conducted between June and August, while recovering firearms, stolen vehicles and other items.
The suspects were linked to different alleged offences, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, vehicle theft and one-chance robbery.
Police Commissioner Olugbenga Adepoju has repeatedly directed officers to intensify intelligence-led operations against criminal networks operating across the state.
Residents Play a Role
One of the notable aspects of the Rumuosi incident is the role reportedly played by members of the public.
The alarm raised by the passenger attracted attention and prompted residents to pursue the vehicle.
That response ultimately helped prevent the alleged attackers from escaping before police arrived.
However, security experts and authorities generally advise members of the public to avoid putting themselves in unnecessary danger when confronting suspected armed criminals.
Providing information to law-enforcement agencies can often be safer and more effective than attempting to apprehend suspects directly.
Safety Concerns for Commuters
The incident has renewed concerns about how passengers can distinguish legitimate commercial vehicles from those being used by criminals.
Commuters in Port Harcourt and other Nigerian cities routinely depend on taxis, minibuses and other forms of public transportation.
That makes the one-chance problem particularly concerning.
Passengers may not know who else is inside a vehicle when they board, especially at night or in poorly lit areas.
What Passengers Can Do
While responsibility for preventing crime rests primarily with law-enforcement agencies, commuters can take reasonable precautions.
Passengers should, where possible, verify the vehicle they are entering and avoid boarding suspicious or poorly identified vehicles.
People should also be cautious about sharing ATM cards, PINs, passwords or other sensitive financial informationwith strangers.
The Rivers police commissioner has similarly urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information about suspicious activities.
What People Are Saying Online
The arrests have generated discussion around the persistent problem of one-chance robberies in Port Harcourt.
Many reactions focus on the passenger's decision to raise an alarm and the intervention by residents.
Some people are praising the public response, saying the incident demonstrates the importance of communities remaining alert.
Others are questioning why one-chance gangs continue to operate despite repeated arrests.
There are also calls for the police to go beyond arresting individual suspects and dismantle the wider networks behind the operations.
Another recurring concern is the safety of commuters travelling at night, particularly people who have limited transport options.
Arrests Are Only One Part of the Solution
The latest arrests are welcome news for residents, but they also highlight a bigger challenge.
If one gang is arrested while another group quickly takes its place, the problem will continue.
Authorities therefore need to investigate how these networks recruit members, obtain vehicles, identify victims and dispose of stolen property.
Information from previous cases could also help investigators establish whether apparently separate robbery incidents are connected.
What Happens Next?
The Rivers State Police Command says investigations are continuing and efforts are being made to apprehend other members of the alleged syndicate.
The arrested suspects are expected to face legal proceedings after investigations are completed.
For Port Harcourt residents, the incident is another reminder to remain cautious when using commercial transport, particularly at night.
For the police, the challenge is now to ensure that the arrest leads to the wider dismantling of the network allegedly operating behind the robberies.
The successful intervention may have prevented another victim from suffering a potentially traumatic experience.
But the larger question remains: how can Port Harcourt make ordinary public transportation safer for everyone?
