Senator Shehu Buba Faces Fresh Banditry Allegations as He Denies Any Link to Criminal Groups

Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, is facing renewed allegations of links to banditry as questions continue to circulate over claims made in a series of videos shared online.

According to Buba, some of the footage being circulated has been taken from unrelated occasions and presented as evidence of meetings with suspected bandit leaders.

The senator said one video showed Kaduna-based Hajj returnees who visited his residence in 2023, while another showed different individuals displaying passports.

He argued that combining the footage created a misleading impression about the identity and activities of the people shown.

Buba also said he had previously petitioned the Nigeria Police Force over what he described as an organised campaign against him.

According to the senator, several suspects were arrested and investigated, while five people were subsequently arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja in October 2025 on charges including criminal conspiracy, cyberstalking, criminal defamation, advance-fee fraud and extortion.

The controversy has attracted particular attention because of the senator's previous role as chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence.

Buba has consistently denied wrongdoing and has argued that his involvement in security-related matters was connected to efforts to address the country's insecurity crisis.

Former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung has called for the relevant authorities to clarify the status of the investigation and for an independent review of the allegations.
