Team Nigeria Targets Record 20 Gold Medals as 2026 Commonwealth Games Begin in Glasgow

Nigeria's quest for Commonwealth Games glory officially begins today as Team Nigeria joins thousands of athletes from across the Commonwealth at the opening of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Nigerian contingent comprises 72 athletes competing in 10 different sports, including athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, table tennis, para sports, judo and swimming. Officials believe this year's squad is one of the strongest Nigeria has assembled for the Games in recent years.

Ambitious Gold Medal Target

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has set an ambitious target of 16 to 20 gold medals, which would eclipse Nigeria's previous best performance of 12 gold medals achieved at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade urged the athletes to compete with confidence and represent Nigeria with pride, saying they had earned their places on one of the world's biggest sporting stages.

Nigeria will once again rely on its traditional strengths in wrestling, weightlifting, athletics and para sports, disciplines that have consistently delivered medals at major international competitions.
