Adeleke's Campaign Petitions British High Commission, IGP Ahead of Osun Governorship Election

The campaign team of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has formally petitioned the British High Commission in Abuja and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), calling for measures to ensure a peaceful, free and credible governorship election in the state.

The petition, submitted by the Imole Campaign Council, comes less than a month before the August 15 governorship election, which is expected to be one of Nigeria's most closely watched off-cycle polls.

Campaign Raises Security Concerns

Speaking after submitting the petition, the council's spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, said the Osun election would serve as a "litmus test" for Nigeria's democratic institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, the council is concerned about reports of political violence and alleged partisan conduct by some security officials. He urged the authorities to ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot without intimidation or interference.

Appeal to the International Community

The campaign also called on the international community, including the British High Commission and election observers, to closely monitor developments before and during the election.

Olajengbesi argued that the credibility of the Osun poll would send an important signal about Nigeria's readiness to conduct free and fair elections in the build-up to the 2027 general elections.

Petition to the Inspector-General of Police

In a separate petition to the IGP, the campaign raised concerns about security in the state and urged the police hierarchy to take proactive steps to prevent violence.

The campaign alleged that there had been incidents of unrest and called for adequate deployment of security personnel to protect voters, electoral officials and election materials. These are allegations made by the campaign and have not been independently established.

Why the Election Matters

The Osun governorship election is widely viewed as one of the most significant state elections before the 2027 general elections.

Political analysts believe the conduct of the poll will be closely scrutinised as an indicator of the preparedness of Nigeria's electoral institutions and security agencies for future nationwide elections.
