The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially opened its much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO), giving Nigerian investors an opportunity to buy shares in Africa’s largest oil refinery.

The public offer opened on Monday, September 14, 2026, with 4.1 billion ordinary shares being offered at ₦525 per share.

If fully subscribed, the offer will raise about ₦2.15 trillion, or roughly $1.6 billion, making it Africa’s largest initial public offering to date.

The offer will remain open until October 13, allowing investors several weeks to subscribe.

The refinery is targeting a broad base of retail investors, including ordinary Nigerians, rather than limiting participation to large institutional investors.

Investors can apply for as few as 10 shares, meaning the minimum subscription is ₦5,250 before any applicable charges.

The IPO values the refinery at approximately ₦63 trillion, or about $47.6 billion, based on the offer price. The shares are expected to be listed on the Nigerian Exchange later in November.

Why Dangote Is Raising the Money

The funds are expected to support the refinery’s expansion and strengthen its ability to raise additional capital for future projects.

The refinery currently has a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

Dangote plans to increase that capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day over the next three years, potentially making the facility one of the world's largest refining operations.

The refinery was built at a cost of about $20 billion and began operations in 2024.

It produces petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products and has become a major supplier to Nigeria’s domestic fuel market.

The company has also expanded its exports of refined products as fuel supply disruptions around the world have increased demand for alternative suppliers.

The refinery reported a net profit of $1.82 billion in the first half of 2026, compared with a loss of about $476 million in the same period of the previous year. Revenue exceeded $13 billion during the period.

What This Means for Nigerians

The IPO represents a significant change in the ownership structure of one of Nigeria’s most important private industrial projects.

Instead of the refinery remaining entirely in private hands, members of the public can now acquire a small stake in the business.

Dangote is targeting as many as 10 million retail investors, making broad public participation a major part of the offering.

For a Nigerian investor, buying shares means becoming a shareholder in the refinery. However, investors should remember that buying shares does not guarantee a profit.

The ₦525 offer price is the price at which the shares are initially being offered to investors. Once the shares begin trading on the Nigerian Exchange, their market value can rise or fall depending on the company's performance, investor demand and wider market conditions.

The IPO also comes at a time when international fuel markets are experiencing major disruption because of the conflict in the Middle East.

The disruption has increased demand for refined petroleum products and strengthened the strategic importance of refineries capable of supplying multiple markets.

Dangote Refinery's expansion could therefore have implications beyond Nigeria, particularly for fuel supplies across Africa.

The company has already indicated plans to expand its international footprint, while Dangote has also been pursuing plans for a major refinery project in Kenya.

What Investors Should Know

The minimum subscription is 10 shares at ₦525 each, meaning an investor can start with ₦5,250 before applicable charges.

The offer opened on September 14 and is scheduled to close on October 13.

Investors should use approved channels and carefully review the official IPO prospectus before committing their money.

The shares are expected to begin trading on the Nigerian Exchange in November.

The IPO marks a major moment for Nigeria's capital market and could bring millions of new retail investors into one of the country's most closely watched companies.

For Dangote, the offering provides capital for expansion.

For Nigerians, it provides something that has rarely been available at this scale: the opportunity to own a small part of one of Africa's biggest industrial projects.
