FG Files Terrorism Charges Against Three Suspects Over Oyo Schoolchildren Abduction

The Federal Government has formally charged three men over their alleged involvement in the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, marking a significant step in the prosecution of one of Nigeria's most closely watched kidnapping cases this year.

The charges were filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja and include a total of 10 counts bordering on terrorism, kidnapping, conspiracy, concealment of information, incitement to terrorism and illegal mining.

The three defendants have been identified as Abdulrazak Umar (also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (also known as Yunusa bin Musa), and Shamsu Adamu Sani (also known as Abu Itisar). According to prosecutors, the suspects are all from Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State.

Alleged Terrorism and Kidnapping Conspiracy

According to court documents, the suspects allegedly conspired with three other individuals—identified as Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed and Ibrahim Khabab—to orchestrate the kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers between January and May 2026.

Prosecutors allege that the defendants not only participated in the conspiracy but also assisted those who carried out the attack and withheld information about the identities and activities of the alleged masterminds despite having prior knowledge of the operation.

Authorities further allege that some of the suspects professed membership of Darul Salam, which investigators describe as an affiliate of the proscribed terrorist group Ansaru. One of the accused is also alleged to have used an online platform to recruit and incite individuals to engage in terrorist activities.

Rescue Followed Weeks of Intelligence Operations

The prosecution comes just days after security agencies successfully rescued the abducted pupils and teachers following more than seven weeks in captivity.

Military authorities said the operation involved coordinated intelligence gathering and joint efforts by the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, Office of the National Security Adviser, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Amotekun, local hunters and other security partners. Officials described it as a carefully planned operation aimed at dismantling the kidnappers' network before securing the victims' release.

Government Sends Strong Message

The filing of terrorism charges signals the Federal Government's intention to pursue the case under Nigeria's anti-terrorism laws rather than treating it solely as a conventional kidnapping prosecution.

Security experts have increasingly warned that organised kidnapping groups are developing structures similar to terrorist organisations, making stronger legal measures necessary to combat their activities.

If convicted, the suspects could face severe penalties under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Public Attention Remains High

The Oyo school abduction drew national attention after pupils and teachers were held captive for nearly two months before their eventual rescue.

The incident reignited concerns over insecurity, particularly attacks targeting schools, while also prompting debate over intelligence gathering, emergency response and the protection of educational institutions.

With formal charges now filed, attention will shift to the Federal High Court, where prosecutors will seek to prove the allegations against the accused.

As the trial begins, many Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether the case results in convictions and whether it provides further clarity on the network allegedly responsible for the abduction.
