Peter Obi Defends Offshore Asset Records, Says He Has Nothing to Hide
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has defended his past offshore business interests, insisting that his financial dealings were lawful, transparent and fully declared. He said attempts to portray his offshore assets as evidence of wrongdoing were politically motivated and ignored the facts.

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has again defended his financial record amid renewed scrutiny over his past offshore assets and business interests.
Speaking during a recent television interview, Obi maintained that there was nothing illegal or secretive about his offshore holdings, stressing that all his investments complied with the law and had been publicly addressed on previous occasions. He argued that the issue was being repeatedly raised for political reasons rather than because of any evidence of misconduct.
Offshore Assets Have Been a Long-Running Political Issue
Questions about Obi's offshore business interests first gained national attention following the release of the Pandora Papers in 2021, which revealed that he had been linked to offshore companies established before he became governor of Anambra State.
At the time, Obi stated that owning or investing in offshore companies is not illegal in itself and maintained that he neither concealed assets nor violated Nigerian law. He has consistently denied allegations of financial impropriety.
Says His Financial Record Is Transparent
Obi also pointed to his tenure as governor of Anambra State, reiterating his claim that he left office with approximately $150 million and ₦36 billion in state savings. He said the funds were invested through commercial banks, properly documented and available for verification, rejecting suggestions that he personally benefited from public funds.
Reaffirms One-Term Presidency Pledge
During the same interview, Obi also restated his commitment to serve only one four-year term if elected president in 2027. According to him, four years is sufficient to begin rebuilding Nigeria if the right policies are implemented, and he said he is prepared to honour that commitment without seeking an extension.
Debate Continues Ahead of 2027
The renewed attention on Obi's financial record comes as political campaigns gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election. While supporters argue that no wrongdoing has been established against him, critics continue to question aspects of his financial disclosures and past business activities.
No court has found Peter Obi guilty of any offence relating to his offshore assets, and he continues to insist that all of his financial dealings were lawful.
