Reno Omokri Awaits Final Clearance as 97% of Tinubu's Ambassadorial Nominees Receive Approval

Majority of Ambassadorial Nominees Cleared

Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says 97% of President Bola Tinubu's ambassador-designates have now received agrément—the formal approval required from host countries before ambassadors can assume office.

According to the ministry, 65 of the 69 nominees have been accepted by their receiving nations, allowing most of them to begin their diplomatic assignments.

Reno Omokri Still Awaiting Mexico's Approval

Among the few outstanding cases is Reno Omokri, who was nominated to serve as Nigeria's ambassador to Mexico.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico has not yet issued formal agrément but stressed that discussions are progressing positively. It added that Nigerian authorities have received assurances that the approval process is on course and expect a response in due course.

Only Two Diplomatic Approvals Outstanding

The ministry disclosed that only Mexico and Japan are yet to issue final diplomatic consent for Nigeria's ambassador-designates.

The second pending nominee is Olumilua Oluwayimika Ayotunwa, who has been posted to Japan.

Officials emphasised that the delay should not be interpreted as a rejection, noting that diplomatic approval procedures often vary from one country to another.

Why Four Appointments Remain Unresolved

The Ministry also explained why four ambassadorial postings remain unresolved overall.

According to the statement:

• The ambassador-designate to Togo declined the appointment, so no request for agrément was submitted.

• The ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, died in April 2026, and a replacement is yet to be named.

• The remaining two pending cases are the postings to Mexico and Japan, where final diplomatic approval is still awaited.

Most Ambassadors Already in Office

The Ministry said the majority of Nigeria's newly appointed ambassadors have already travelled to their countries of assignment and presented their Letters of Credence, formally beginning their diplomatic duties.

It described the ambassadorial rollout as progressing smoothly and reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to strengthening Nigeria's diplomatic presence around the world.

Omokri's Political Journey

Reno Omokri is a former presidential aide, author, and political commentator who previously served in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In March 2026, President Tinubu approved his posting as Nigeria's ambassador to Mexico, following Senate confirmation of his nomination.
